May 20 2008

Abdullah Ramz Mahmoud Kalloub, a two and a half year old Palestinian boy from Gaza Strip, is diagnosed with Mevalonic Aciduria. Abdullah has a twin sister, Angham. From the first days after the birth, in observing the twins, the parents find out that something was different in how the new born boy,Abdullah absorbed the food, compared with the twin sister Angham.

During the first week, the doctors found emphysema in Abdullah's abdomen, dryness and wrinkles on face and body of the child. After dealing with the symptoms as merely an incidental thing, while time past on during the first months, Abdullah needed testing and observation according to the doctors at the al Naser Hospital.

Abdullah's symptoms were presented to the medical crew, including specialist in Gaza City, they write during this period of observation in the medical report, that hernia operation is urgent. In January 13 2006,a surgery was scheduled and conducted on the little boy, without improvement but a swollen abdomen, despite the demise of other symptoms.

In July 2006,Abdullah was admitted to Mohammad Al -Durra Hospital for children. After 26 days past on with some high fever, and during intensive medical treatment, because of the child's critical condition, the parents were told that the child is suffering from a virus - decease in the blood, called (CMV) CYTOMEGALOVIRUS.The child was subscribed Geniciclover as treatment for the disease. Unfortunately the medicine could not be found, or allowed in to Gaza Strip, the Israelis have routinely prevented shipment of medicine and medical equipment in to Gaza Strip.

After many tiresome autocratic formalities and applications to the Israeli authority,to leave Gaza Strip,on the 18th of February 2006 Abdullah was allowed to travel, with his father to Egypt for a follow-up treatment, in which the child received medication after many tests. The results of the tests confirmed the findings of the disease (CMV.) The Egyptian doctors also said that the symptoms of infection on the liver and spleen, is not the main cause of the disease.

So again, in the beginning of April 2006,Abdullah was given a new treatment during a period of 3 weeks. The overall health status of the child has not improved, but worsened. In November the 18 th 2006,the sick little boy. Abdullah traveled once again to the hospital in Egypt. The specialists confirmed that the results of the analysis freed Abdullah of CMV disease.

In February of 2007 Abdallah traveled back to Egypt from Gaza Strip a third time, to evaluate the results of the last tests of the liver, in order to determine the cause of the inflammation of the liver and spleen, the findings are now:1 -Bone Marrow aspiration(Normal study), 2-Sphingo mylinase B glycosidase ( -Ve),3-Xi antitrypsin (-Ve),4-HGB electrophoresis osmotic fragility of G6PD enlyme assay (-Ve).

On the 21th of March 2007, new tests were taken also this time in Egypt, and the result showed congenital hepatic fibrosis. Therefore, the doctors recommended surgical intervention atransplant of a donors liver, which cost's $55.000.During this time, the child,Abdallah continue to suffer from
heat waves and high fever, the abdomen is swollen,by the increasing infection of liver and spleen.

In the beginning of May 2007, Abdullah was admitted to Tel-Hashomer Hospital in Tel Aviv, were new testing. and analyses for new symptoms of the child, Abdullah was then prescribed Cortisone treatment. The outcome of the test was different compared with the results of the tests made by Egyptian doctors. The findings now show that Abdullah has a severe infection in his abdomen ( liver and spleen) and from now Abdullah will be treated with Cortisone, until a donor is found and a transplantation can be done.

The source of heat waves and fever, have not yet been identified, if the fever is a result from the disease Mevalonic Aciduria, there is no treatment to be find for this rare disease, but it is possible to transplant the marrow of bones, from a donor within Abdullah family, the problem for this family is the cost of this transplantation, the family simply does not have these money.

The 11th of March 2008, Abdullah accompanied by his father and his four brothers, was admitted again to Tel-Hashomer Hospital, to conduct tests for tissue- matching, to determine if there is a possibility for donation from a member of the family. The doctors in Tel-Hashomer Hospital, have told Abdullahs parents, that the transplantation is urgent and in Abdullah's age appropriate, the doctors have told the parents they fear it is not possible to control the disease later on in life.

Is now the end of a short and difficult journey without a solution for the little child approaching ?? Abdullah's parents are paralyzed by the knowledge, that this huge amount required for the operation, is impossible to find.Even if the family have done their best to raze money among relatives and friends in Gaza Strip. The bitter truth is that every individual and family on Gaza Strip have had their share of misfortune. Every family has lost a child or a relative, a husband a wife, a sister or a brother, during the harsh circumstances in which the Palestinian society on Gaza Strip are facing, in particular due to the 10 month long, shameful Israeli/International blockade and siege imposed on Gaza Strip.

The Palestine Authority has given a donation of $20.000, which will cover part of the expenses. The amount required to perform the transplantation is $45.000.The parents of the sick child have in their desperation turned to a number of charitable foundations for aid. However the Israeli occupant authorities, has not permitted charities on Gaza Strip and the West Bank, to operate their institutions and money transactions.Human Rights organizations use to give aid in similar situations though the conditions have changed, because of the blockade and siege imposed on Gaza Strip.

Abdullah lost his 6 year old sister Marah in March this year, Marah died of asphyxia, because of a combination of a shortness of specialists and medical staff, and the lack of medications to treat the decease.Abdullah's parents fear they will also lose their 2 year old son Abdullah in front of their eyes, without being able to save the life of the child.

On behalf of this hard stricken Gaza Strip family, we ask our readers to help the little Abdullah with donations for the urgent transplantation.

After request and approval medical documents can be provided to hospitals and other medical institutions.
